I’m a big fan of forward planning, clearly, and one of the ways I motivate myself through the editing grind is by way of excitement for what comes after it.
So at this stage in the game, I will already begin thinking about my next project to come after I finish editing and publishing my current project. Luckily, for now anyway, I have a queue of potential stories in various levels of consideration.
The two front runners are very different beasts, and one of them is different from most of my other writing (and different even from both Beneath the Wood and Five Talents).
Without giving too much away, one is a sci-fi noir, the other a young adult drama of a man trying to reconcile notions of romance with love in the modern age of Facebook, OKC and Tinder.
You can probably guess which one I’m very much leaning toward based on the above paragraph. My description isn’t just indicative of a preferential lean, to be honest a sci-fi noir sounds like a good little adventure of a writing project. The honest truth is, I don’t have the entirety of the plot at all mapped out, or any depth of characters. The other project, much more so.
Add in the fact that the latter project is much more in line with the tone and intent of Beneath the Wood, it makes sense to add some consistency to my projects list rather than another all new genre.
So, there you have it. Give me a couple months of sweat and tears over my draft of Five Talents, and I’ll be working and sharing lines from Unicorns and Satellites. The sci-fi project remains in queue though.
